The Challenge We Address

Understanding the educational gap in South Africa

Approximately 78% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning in any language. Literacy rates vary significantly across provinces, with rural areas often underperforming compared to urban areas.

Many children are taught in a language that is not their home language, which hinders their ability to acquire reading and writing skills. Children from low-income families and under-resourced schools are more likely to struggle with literacy.
